Dr. Alan J. Lipman

Dr. Alan J. Lipman is the licensed clinical psychologist in practice in Georgetown, Washington, DC, who is known for his appearances over the past 10 years on MSNBC, CNN, CNN Headline News, NBC Evening News, Court TV (TruTV), and the BBC. Dr. Lipman is an expert in the areas of violence, violent behavior, crime, and terrorism, and a frequent writer and commentator on political psychology, as well as in the general areas of psychology and psychotherapy. In the area of political psychology, he writes and is a commentator on the mind and behavior of political figures; in the area of terrorism, he has been a prominent commentator on the causes and effects of the September 11, 2001 terrorism events and subsequent anthrax attacks in the United States; on the psychology of terrorists and terrorist accomplices, such as Zacarias Moussaoui, on the causes of terrorist-driven events such as the Jill Carroll kidnapping; and on the social effects of terrorism such as fear, panic, as well as travel and airline avoidance. In addition to his doctorate, Lipman also holds a Juris Doctor from Georgetown University Law Center, where he was also named a member of the Editorial Board of the American Criminal Law Review.

Dr. Lipman is a regular commentator on political psychology, the psychology of political behavior, and the political mind, having been interviewed on the psychology of Barack Obama, the 2008 election, and the behavior of politicians by such media as the Chicago Tribune, CNN, Le Point, and the CBC.  Dr. Lipman is also a frequent commentator on U.S. crime and violence, including commentary on the causes of notable cases of homicide, murder and manslaughter; on spousal murder; on school shootings; on family homicide; on white collar crime and on workplace and community violence. Cases in which the analysis of Dr. Lipman has been prominent include the Virginia Tech massacre, the shootings in Denver and Colorado Springs, the Omaha Mall Shootings, the shootings at Columbine, Jonesboro, Nickel Mines, Paducah, Springfield, Oregon, and Pearl, Mississippi; the Mark Barton family homicide; the Washington, DC and Ohio sniper shootings; the Han shootings of 2006; and the national trials and cases of Simpson, Peterson et al.

Accomplishments

Dr. Lipman has served as a professor at Georgetown University, The George Washington University, and Rutgers University, and has also held positions at The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and Yale Psychiatric Institute. At Georgetown, he founded the Center for the Study of Violence as well as the Georgetown Youth Violence Summit. Dr. Lipman also served as Co-Chairman of the Academic Advisory Council of the White House Campaign Against Youth Violence, initiated at a White House summit during the Clinton Administration. He has also served as a consultant on the effects of September 11, 2001 to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and to the U.S. Department of State. He lectures both nationally and internationally.

Dr. Lipman is author of 15 publications in professional journals, and has been frequently interviewed by such publications and organizations as The Washington Post, the Associated Press, The Los Angeles Times, Agence France Press, U.S. News and World Report, USA Today, and The National Post regarding articles on violence, crime, and terrorism. Dr. Lipman is also the author of the book “Misunderstanding Violence: Cyclical Tragedies”, planned for publication in 2008, and is represented by Jan Miller of Dupree/Miller (Stephen Covey, Dr. Phil McGraw, etc.), and is also the author of the well-known political and media psychology blog Head of State.
