On Wednesday, U.S. officials pledge to sponsor another million in funds to stop child trafficking in Haiti. This decision was made after the first meeting with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in conjunction with the President’s Interagency Task Force to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons. The task force was formed 10 years ago and has maintained due to the mandates and its continued need. Haiti is especially vulnerable to this travesty since the earthquake about a month ago reports CNN:
Ambassador Louis CdeBaca of the State department’s Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons said “we are hearing anecdotal evidence from “UNICEF” about trafficking of children but there are no firm figures on it.” Knowing that trafficking is occurring is only half the battle. The State Department is hoping that the funds provide child safety will truly be distributed for that cause.
The Department of State does have some information. “We are hearing about men coming into the camps offering food and water to girls to come with them in trucks,” CdeBaca said alluding to the fact that these tactics are being used to manipulate and take advantage of these girls. He did however add that there is no “hard” evidence to validate the story.
